Planning Your Engagement Session with Charleston Engagement Photographers

Charleston

Between the colorful houses, historic streets, giant oak trees, and the beach just a short drive away, it’s pretty easy to see why so many couples choose Charleston for their engagement photos.

Hi, I’m Abby! I’m a Greenville, SC photographer who loves traveling to Charleston and documenting couples in places that feel like an experience, not just a pretty backdrop!

And if you’re planning your engagement session from Greenville, you’re only about three hours away, which makes Charleston a pretty fun excuse for a little weekend getaway!

I’ve visited Charleston more times than I can count at this point. I’ve gone for day trips with my now-husband, vacations, photography and admin days, and even my own senior session! I also remember going to King Street in high school because I was determined to find a specific pair of TOMS. (Yes, this was a very serious fashion mission in 2012.)

But somehow, every time I go back, I find something new to photograph. Maybe it’s another colorful house I somehow didn’t notice before, a cute little restaurant, or one of those random Charleston streets that makes me stop mid-walk.

So if you’re considering making the trip to Charleston for your engagement photos, here’s what I’d want you to know before we go!

Why Choose Charleston for Your Engagement Photos?

One of my favorite things about Charleston is that your engagement session doesn’t have to feel like you went to a pretty location, took pictures, and immediately left.

You can make a whole date out of it!

Spend the afternoon wandering downtown, stop by Rainbow Row, grab something to eat, walk along the water, and finish the evening at the beach. With so many restaurants, shops, streets, and little places to explore, your engagement session can easily become part of a really fun day together.

And THAT is what I love about photographing couples.

I don’t want your photos to feel like you showed up, stood in front of a pretty backdrop, smiled at the camera for an hour, and called it a day. I want the location to give you something to actually do together.

Charleston is especially fun for that because we can walk, explore, stop for a snack, sit by the water, or just enjoy being together while I document all those little things happening in between.

Best Charleston Locations for Engagement Photos

There are SO many places around Charleston that could work for an engagement session, and the right one really depends on what feels like you two.

Here are a few of the places I’d consider first.

The Battery & White Point Garden

If you want that classic Charleston look with historic architecture AND water without actually being on the beach, The Battery is a pretty obvious choice.

Around The Battery, you’ll find historic homes, giant oak trees, waterfront views, and beautiful walking paths. Basically, you get a little bit of everything without having to drive all over Charleston.

I’ve spent time here with my husband, and one of my favorite Charleston memories was walking around the area after stopping by colorful Rainbow Row and grabbing food from Poogan’s Porch for a little picnic by the water.

Which is also why I think this area works so well for engagement photos. You’re not just showing up to take pictures. You can walk around, talk, grab food, sit by the water, and make an afternoon out of it.

And yes, I’ll probably have you stop every few minutes because I’ll see something I want to photograph. 😂

Historic Downtown Charleston

If you love colorful buildings and old-world charm, give me ALL the Charleston streets.

Rainbow Row is probably the most recognizable, but you definitely don’t have to limit yourself to one famous street. Some of my favorite parts of Charleston are actually the little details you notice while wandering around—the colorful doors, flowers, architecture, windows, and all the different textures throughout the city.

I’ve written an entire guide to my favorite Charleston Instagram spots if you want even more ideas before your trip.

But for engagement photos, I don’t think we need to hunt down the “perfect” Pinterest location.

Honestly, I think it’s more fun when we can wander around and discover things as we go.

Maybe we walk past a colorful house you love. We find a cute little alley. You stop to dance in the middle of the street. Those little moments are what make your photos feel like your photos instead of another copy of something you’ve already seen online.

And don’t worry—we’re not just going to show up in Charleston and hope for the best, haha!

Before every engagement session, we’ll have a design consultation where we narrow down your favorite locations, talk through your vision, and make sure everything makes sense geographically. Because as much as I love exploring, I also want to make sure we take care of you in the most efficient way.

Folly Beach

While these beach photos were taken at a different beach, this ocean and sand backdrop similar to Folly Beach gives you something completely different from downtown Charleston.

It feels more relaxed, coastal, and playful. If you’d rather kick off your shoes, walk along the shoreline, and not worry about keeping your outfit perfectly clean, this could be such a fun option.

I’ve photographed around Folly Beach myself, and I love that it doesn’t feel quite as polished as downtown Charleston.

It’s playful—which is how SO many of my couples describe themselves—and sometimes that’s exactly what you want your engagement photos to feel like.

If you’re the couple who would rather turn your session into a beach date than a formal portrait session, Folly could be right up your alley.

Charleston Engagement Photos: Downtown or the Beach?

Okay, this is a hard one because they’re SO different!

Downtown Charleston gives you all that historic charm: colorful houses, architecture, gardens, sidewalks, and little streets that immediately feel like Charleston.

The beach gives you the ocean, movement, wind, barefoot photos, and that dreamy golden-hour glow.

So if you’re trying to decide, I’d worry less about which location photographs “better” and think more about what feels most like you two.

Would you naturally spend a date walking around a city, popping into shops, and finding somewhere new for dinner?

Or are you much more likely to kick off your shoes and sit in the sand until the sun goes down?

And if you can’t choose…you don’t necessarily have to!

Depending on timing and the locations we choose, we may be able to make your session part of a whole Charleston date and incorporate more than one setting!

What Should You Wear for Charleston Engagement Photos?

Charleston is already pretty colorful, so I love when outfits complement the environment rather than compete with it.

Neutrals, creams, soft blues and greens, and other muted or pastel colors can photograph beautifully against the colorful homes and historic streets. I also LOVE outfits with movement and texture because they give us something else to play with while we’re walking around.

And please don’t underestimate how much walking you may do!

Those cute heels might look AMAZING with your outfit, but if we’re wandering around downtown Charleston for an hour, bring a second pair of shoes for walking. Your feet will thank you later.

If we’re heading to the beach, think about movement there too. Dresses that catch the breeze, pants you can actually walk in, and shoes you don’t mind getting sandy will make the whole experience easier.

And if you’re game to get in the water at the end? Even better. Justttt maybe bring a change of clothes for the drive home, haha!

You can also read my engagement session preparation guide for more ideas before we start planning.

But remember: you do NOT have to figure all of this out by yourself.

Outfit planning is something we’ll talk through together during your design consultation so your clothing, location, and overall vibe all feel cohesive.

When Should You Take Charleston Engagement Photos?

If you’re dreaming about that warm, glowy Charleston light, I’d typically plan your engagement session around golden hour.

Butttt we also need to talk about Charleston heat.

Charleston can get HOT and humid, especially during the summer, and I don’t exactly want you sweating through the cute outfit we just spent all that time planning.

Depending on the season, we may choose an earlier morning or later start time, find shaded areas throughout the session, or plan your photos for a cooler part of the year altogether.

Crowds are another thing to consider, especially around popular downtown locations.

Beautiful light matters, but I also want you to actually enjoy yourselves—not spend your whole engagement session trying to dodge 47 tourists walking through Rainbow Row behind you.

That’s why location and timing are two things I like to plan together instead of treating them as completely separate decisions.

Traveling From Greenville to Charleston for Your Engagement Session

If you’re based in Greenville, Charleston can be such a fun excuse for a little getaway.

Instead of thinking: drive three hours, take pictures, drive three hours home…make it a DATE!

Grab coffee when you get into town. Wander downtown. Go shopping. Have your engagement session later in the afternoon, then change clothes and go somewhere fun for dinner.

Your engagement session doesn’t have to be the entire reason you went to Charleston. (Although it absolutely can be, haha!)

It can just be one really fun part of the day.

And I think that’s part of what makes photographs more meaningful years later. I don’t want you to only remember what your gallery looked like. I want you to remember the Charleston trip.

What to Look for in Charleston Engagement Photographers

If you’re searching for Charleston engagement photographers, you’ll find plenty of talented photographers serving the Lowcountry!

But when you’re choosing your photographer, I’d look beyond whether you simply like their portfolio.

Of course you want an editing style that feels like you, but I’d also look at the experience they provide.

Will they help you figure out where to go? What to wear? When to schedule everything? How your locations work together? What happens with your photographs after the session?

You shouldn’t have to figure out every location, parking spot, outfit, and timeline by yourself. And please don’t worry about knowing how to pose or what to do with your hands. That’s my job!

During your session, I’ll give you enough direction to help you feel comfortable without turning every photograph into a stiff pose. I want room for the quirky laughs, the movement, the dancing, and all those little in-between interactions that are actually yours.

You can browse my couples and engagement portfolio if you want to get a better feel for how I photograph those moments.

And my job doesn’t stop when I put the camera away.

Through my full-service photography experience, I also help couples decide what they want to do with their engagement photographs so they don’t disappear into an online gallery or get buried on a phone.

We can turn them into photographs you frame in your first home together, an album you pull out on anniversaries, or prints you display at your wedding before bringing them home with you afterward.

Because these photos are documenting the beginning of a whole new chapter of your family. I think they deserve to actually be enjoyed.
