Furman University Rose Garden Photoshoot Guide & Real Sessions

Engagement, Greenville, SC

If you’re dreaming of a romantic, garden-inspired session in Greenville, SC, the Furman University Rose Garden (formally referred to as the Janie Earle Furman Rose Garden) is easily one of the most beautiful locations in the area.

I always love photographing sessions at Furman University—there’s so much variety where each area feels a little different from the next. From quiet garden corners of the Asia Garden’s cherry blossoms (one of my spring favorites) to open views by the lake, Furman University offers elevated spots in landscaped nature. If you’re curious what a full session could look like at Furman, you can explore other spots around campus here: Furman University engagement session.

The Furman University rose garden is tucked beside the Furman Bell Tower Bookstore, which is also the most convenient parking lot nearby. As you walk from the parking lot to the rose garden, you’ll walk beside the lake, lush lawn overlooking the bell tower across the lake, and twinkling lights over the Furman outdoor bistro patio. The rose garden feels like a hidden nook as you walk through greenery that opens up to a gazebo in the middle of the rose bushes.

🌿 Why the Furman University Rose Garden is So Special

As a Greenville SC photographer, I’m always drawn to locations that feel alive and lush—places where you can move naturally, interact, and create memories. The rose garden at Furman is exactly that kind of space.

The roses here typically begin blooming in early May and can last through November, with the fullest, most vibrant blooms appearing in late spring and early summer. Because the timing can vary slightly each year, I always keep a close eye on the garden leading up to your session, whether that means checking in or stopping by in advance, to ensure we’re catching it at its most beautiful.

Even outside of peak bloom, the space still photographs beautifully. When the roses are more minimal, the garden’s structured hedges and pathways take on a maze-like story book feel, creating a different, but equally romantic backdrop. I photographed a winter bridal session here and despite the lack of roses, the winter light against the white pillars and green hedges provided a beautiful bridal backdrop.

Because Furman University offers so many beautiful backdrops, just around the lake, you’ll also find the Asia Garden, which offers a completely different look—especially in the spring. If you love soft florals, you might also enjoy this cherry blossom engagement session at Furman, which pairs beautifully with a rose garden session.

☀️ Best Time of Year for Photos

Each season gives the rose garden a slightly different personality, which makes it such a versatile location.

Early Spring: Little to no roses but still soft and delicate, with nearby blooms like cherry blossoms adding variety

Late Spring to Summer: The fullest roses and most vibrant greenery

Fall: Warmer tones with a slightly more muted, romantic feel

Winter: Minimal, clean, and refined—perfect for a more editorial look

I’ve had the chance to photograph a handful of bridal portraits here, and the combination of structured hedges, soft blooms, and a soft wedding gown with florals creates almost an ‘English courtyard’ feel.
