Surprise proposal at Isle of Palms with oceanfront setup

As an Isle of Palms proposal photographer, I love helping couples plan surprise beach proposals that feel thoughtful, relaxed, and completely true to their relationship.

Conner reached out to me well in advance for one of the biggest moments of his life: proposing to Sophie, his then-girlfriend who lives in Greenville, SC. Even though he was planning from out of town, he trusted me to help guide the entire experience virtually — from outfit tips and proposal setup ideas to beach access recommendations, timing, backup plans, and post-proposal engagement photos.

As a Greenville SC photographer, I photograph proposals across South Carolina, and I was so excited to help bring this one to life at Isle of Palms.

Planning an Isle of Palms Beach Proposal from Out of Town

One of the biggest concerns people have when planning a surprise proposal is figuring out how to make the moment feel natural without giving away the surprise.

That becomes even more challenging when you’re planning from another city.

Thankfully, Conner reached out early, which gave us time to thoughtfully walk through every detail together. We planned his proposal virtually while being cities apart so I could guide him through everything from outfits and beach setup ideas to choosing the best proposal location and creating a smooth timeline for the evening.

If you’re just starting the planning process, I also shared more advice on how to plan a surprise proposal, including timing, location scouting, backup plans, and what to expect after the big moment.

For the setup, we landed on a cozy beach arrangement with a blanket, candles, and Sophie’s favorite florals. We wanted the proposal to feel romantic and elevated while still blending naturally into the beach environment.

A major tip for a beach proposal: if you’re using fresh flowers, keep them hydrated for as long as possible before setup. And if you’re using candles on the beach, battery-operated candles are almost always the better option because of the sea breeze.

If you’re dreaming up a coastal proposal, I also shared even more beach proposal planning tips from another South Carolina beach proposal session.

Choosing the Best Isle of Palms Beach Access Point

Before the proposal, my husband and I scouted multiple Isle of Palms beach access points to find the best backdrop for Conner and Sophie’s proposal.

This part matters so much more than most people realize.

Different access points create completely different visual experiences. Some areas emphasize wide ocean views while others feature dunes, sea grass, marsh textures, or quieter stretches of shoreline.

Conner specifically wanted the ocean to be the hero of the backdrop, so we chose a location that highlighted the water itself and allowed for clean, open views behind them.

The very next day, I photographed another beach session nearby that focused more on marshy sea grass and coastal texture, which required a completely different access point altogether.

That is why location scouting is such an important part of my process as a South Carolina proposal photographer. The location should support the story and personality of the couple, not just look pretty.

For couples who are still deciding between the coast and the Upstate, I also put together a guide to the best proposal spots near Greenville SC.

A Full Walk-Through Before the Surprise Proposal

On the morning of the proposal, Conner snuck away so we could meet before noon and rehearse everything directly on the beach.

We met at the access point I had chosen and walked through the proposal step by step so he would feel completely confident going into the evening.

We talked through where he would walk, where he would stop, where I would be hiding, where the proposal setup would sit, how he would position himself (and kneel!), and what we would do if crowds became an issue. During our rehearsal, the beachfront was packed, so we immediately created a backup spot in case sunset became too crowded for the original plan. (Thankfully, we never had to use the backup!)

When the proposal time arrived later that evening, we were able to set up the blanket and florals right beside the water exactly as planned.

Conner handed me the blanket and candles earlier in the day, and shortly before the proposal, his family arrived with fresh florals to finish the setup.

This reminded me so much of another proposal where we were planning a proposal from out of town and building every detail ahead of time so the moment could feel calm, personal, and fully thought through.

Here’s a first-hand review of how Conner felt so confident with Abby Joy Studio!

When it was finally time for the proposal, my husband and I pretended to be a couple enjoying a beach date nearby so Sophie would not suspect anything.

And honestly? It worked perfectly.

Afterward, Sophie mentioned multiple times that she truly did not even notice anyone around during the proposal. That is always the goal, whether I’m a plain tourist or hiding behind a tree! 😉 Because even though beach proposals happen in public places, they should still feel intimate and emotionally private in the moment!

Conner led Sophie down toward the setup beside the water, paused, and then got down on one knee.

She said “yes!”

Those few seconds after a proposal are always some of my favorite moments to photograph because the emotions are completely real and completely unfiltered. Those moments happen once, and they deserve to be remembered fully.

Isle of Palms Engagement Photos After She Said Yes

After the proposal, we moved straight into an engagement session on the beach, and they just had pure joy!

This is one of the reasons I love photographing surprise proposals so much. Once the nerves disappear, couples are glowing. The excitement is real, the energy is joyful, and the photos feel incredibly alive.

I intentionally chose this specific beach access point because there was a Hobie resting on the sand nearby, which added such a whimsical and playful coastal element to their engagement photos (Conner liked it too while scouting!). Throughout the session, I made sure to maximize the excitement of the moment with playful prompts, including running shots, which were perfect since they’re runners!

Beach proposal session tip: Bring a wide-tooth comb. Since this was a surprise for Sophie, only I knew to be prepared with a comb! This sole item proved to be so helpful with all the dynamic shots we were capturing.

Their beach proposal naturally turned into engagement photos, which is one of my favorite parts of the proposal and engagement photography experience.

Beach Proposal Tips from a Isle of Palms Proposal Photographer

If you’re planning a beach proposal at Isle of Palms, here are a few things I would recommend.

Reach Out Early

The earlier you begin planning, the more flexibility you have with timing, beach access options, setup ideas, and backup plans.

Choose Your Beach Access Carefully

Different beach access points create different visual experiences. Some areas are more private while others offer better ocean views, dunes, or coastal textures. I can help you with choosing which landscape will look best during our consultation, but ultimately, a walk-through with me will give you 100% confidence of the space.

Have a Backup Plan

Crowds, tides, weather, and wind can all shift quickly at the beach. Having a second location nearby helps everything feel calm and stress-free.

Use Battery-Operated Candles

They create the same romantic feel without battling the ocean breeze.

Keep Fresh Flowers Hydrated

Beach heat and wind can quickly affect florals, so keeping arrangements hydrated until setup makes a huge difference.

Turn the Proposal Into an Engagement Session

You are already dressed up, emotional, and in a beautiful location. Adding engagement photos immediately afterward is one of the best ways to preserve the excitement of the moment.

Turning Their Proposal Photos Into Heirloom Prints

One of my favorite parts of any session happens after the photos are delivered since your photographs deserve to live beyond a screen. I am so excited to deliver a handcrafted custom linen heirloom box for Conner and Sophie filled with printed memories from this proposal and engagement session.

There is something incredibly meaningful about holding these moments in your hands years later — remembering the sound of the ocean, the surprise, the excitement, and the exact place where your engagement began.

That is what I want every couple to walk away with: images that feel beautiful now and meaningful for decades.
