As a Greenville SC couples photographer, I always aim to create sessions that reflect the true spirit of each couple. When it came time for our own engagement photos last summer, I treated them the same way I do for my clients—with intentionality, emotion, and all the meaning.

We chose Black Balsam Knob, a breathtaking spot near Asheville, NC, because it reflects our love for adventure and the outdoors (although my husband’s really introduced me to a whole new level of “adventure” nowadays😂).

What Makes for Intentional Couple’s Photos?

Intentional couple’s photography isn’t about just showing up and smiling for the camera. It’s about telling your story in a way that feels real, emotional, and truly you. Here are a few key ingredients I always include:

1. Your Vibe as a Couple

Before every session, I ask couples to describe themselves in a few words. For us, one was definitely “playful”. Knowing your vibe helps me guide you into natural moments that reflect who you are—not just poses for the sake of posing.

2. A Meaningful Location

Location sets the tone for your session. I always recommend choosing a spot that holds meaning or matches your personality. While Black Balsam Knob wasn’t the easiest location logistically, it was 100% worth it for the 360* views.

To make it easy, I prepped everything—researched trails, brought a pop-up tent to change outfits, packed flashlights and blankets (it was cold when the sun set even in June!), and timed the hike around golden hour. It was such a meaningful way to capture our story.

3. Bring Meaningful Items That Reflect Your Story

Meaningful mementos (or favorite activities) make your session personal and heartfelt.

We brought letters we’d written to each other, and film cameras + balloons (a nod to how we met!). These little touches made our session feel even more special—and the photos are full of emotion and nostalgia.

4. Be Present, Not Perfect

I know it’s easy to stiffen up in front of a camera. I get it—I’ve been on both sides of the lens! That’s why I approach each session with gentle, creative direction (imagine that we’re creating a “video/movie” vs a “photo”!), helping you settle in and truly enjoy the experience.

Capture This Fleeting Season

Engagement is such a sweet, short chapter—one full of energy, transition, and anticipation. These photos of us feel like a time capsule. They remind me of our youth (hehe), our excitement, and our love. And yes, we’re printing them for our home!!
